These days, it seems like the answer to everything is confidence.
“Just be confident”.
You hear this all the time. ALL the time. But have you ever stopped to think about what that even means?
I get a feeling that everyone from self help gurus, internet marketing and business pros, dating coaches and fashion advisors love to think it’s a magical ability, contained entirely inside your mind and if you could only get your mind straight and flip the confidence switch, everything you touch would turn to gold.
Sounds easy enough alright, where’s the switch, so you can feel more confident RIGHT NOW?
If not, here’s a little help from the good ol’ dictionary:
“confidence – a feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.”
What does that tell you?
What it tells me, is that you need abilities and qualities in the first place. Otherwise, what’s there to appreciate?
Yep, how unfortunate. You need to have real, aplicable skills to be confident at a job interview. You need to love the music you create to be confident on stage. You need to be attractive and do well in life to be confident with women.
You can’t swipe every worry and shortcoming under the rug and “just be confident”.
Instead, you have to develop real skills, abilities, character and values that take time to build into your life.
